Project 4

Project 2 revision On October 25, 1938, the United States Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act, which established the first mandated minimum wage. The first wage was set at $0.25 per hour, which equates to $4.55 in 2020 with inflation (2009). In 2020, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. While states have manipulated this wage to fit cost of living, $7.25 is the federal law (2020).             Since 1938 the minimum wage has been increasing not only with inflation but to accommodate peoples wants for higher pay for work. In 2020, the mainstreamed new standard for minimum wage, which was set by the political left, is $15 per hour. The left proclaims that this is a “living wage” and allows people to not have to work as much to provide for themselves and their family. The political right is split between abolishing the minimum wage or keeping it the same. They claim that an increase in wages would consequently cause...

Final Submission

The picture on the table of contents was too generic and did not have any action, and I was planning to meet with Carson (the person in all of the pictures) to have another shoot in which I could obtain more photos of him playing. I was hoping to ask him a couple more questions and put more quotes from him into the article. The question I planned to ask were "If golf does not work out, what do you plan to do", "Where do you see yourself in 10 years?" and "What professional golfer/ person do you look up to?". These would have created a friendly interaction that the audience could relate ...

Creative Critical Reflections Question #4

"How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?" The technology was used in almost every part of the creation of my magazine and blog posts. I used the standard computer that they supply us with at school for the majority, and at home I used my HP laptop. This is where I created the magazine and edited the blog posts from. Both computers were very high quality and made it easy to edit my magazine and blog. Blogger.com and Canva.com were the websites used specifically for the blog and magazine creation. They were both free to use and were easily accessible from the computers I was using. I used my iphoneX to take the pictures. I made sure that I took several photos at every position to ensure that the quality of the picture was high and looked professional. It is also how I organized the photo shoot and interviewing arrangements with Carson and his family, which is the person I write about in my article. I did not have any graph...

Creative Critical Reflections Question #3

"How did your production skills develop throughout this project?" The beginning of the magazine required creative design, to find a format to make my magazine pages. This was to fit the pictures and text in the pages, without making it too crammed, and able to make the pages look professional. I then planned out the interview and the location, photo shoot, and person to do those with. I used my Iphone X to take these photos, and the location was chosen because of the scenery around the golf course and the golf course itself. After the photo shoot, I then interviewed Carson and his parents, asking them each several questions. I then organized the interview context into a story, and created a article that incorporated statistics, a story, and interviews to help the story flow. I then chose the pictures that were of the highest quality and captured the action I was looking for the best. The magazine was then created using these pictures and the article that I wrote. I chose ...

Creative Critical Reflections Question #2

"How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?"     The audience engages with my magazine because of the stories and information that is provided. The stories are about local and professional sports and all sports are included. The audience engagement research posts have shown me that my magazine is similar to many other magazines that are successful, that they target a specific group of people, yet people outside of the targeted group are still interested in purchasing the magazine. I also realized that starting local and then spreading out further with distribution and advertisement is better than immediately going regional, because it can grow interest and popularity without wasting unnecessary money on advertisement.  My marketing plan is to use social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and twitter, along with local newspaper and magazines to advertise. I will allow direct orders and yearly s...

Creative Critical Reflection Question #1

"How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?" This magazine is a very unique magazine that goes after a specific group of people, but at the same time anybody can be interested in the magazine as it is a magazine that is very unique. It challenges usual magazine conventions because not only is it an all sports magazine, it also gives stories on local sports, state-wide sports and professional  sports, and it gives advice to any/everyone reading the magazine on any given sport. It is targeting those who want to hear about local sports, but that is only about 1/4-1/2 of the magazine, and the rest is filled with other useful sports information.  The camera shots are very high quality, and are usually action shots, to let the reader experience the action through the page. If the shots were not action shots, then it would be boring and not as fun to read. The whole point of a sports magazine is too show the sports bein...

3 Quarter Submission

Distribution Research Post #3: Runners World

Runners world is a magazine dedicated to everything running and have a website with articles and pictures. On their website, they have links to all their social media platform accounts, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and more. When you click on the social media's platform icon, it brings you to their page/account on that platform.  It is very easy to find out how to subscribe to their magazine because at the top right corner of the page at all times, there is a "subscribe" link, that opens another tab and allows you to purchase a subscription you choose, with 3 options. One is a 1 month subscription for $5, the second is a 1 year subscription priced at $30, and the third is a subscription to their online instructional videos that are called "on demand" along with the magazine for 50$ for one year.

Distribution Plan

The digital distribution I have chosen to distribute my magazine would be through social media and website advertisements. Social media is not only popular with the younger generations, but Facebook in particular is used greatly by people over the age of 40. Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook would be the main choices of advertisement for social media. An advertisement would appear and give a 5 second video of the magazine and have a small summary (5 seconds long) of the magazine. There would also be a link to the magazine to be able to order it online directly and get it shipped directly. There would also be the option of seeing what stores offer the magazine and the ability to order online and pick it up in one of the local stores. I also would advertise in the local newspaper, and the newspaper of the Sarasota County, which extends the radius of distribution for newspaper readers. There are approximately 38,000 people who get the Sarasota-Herald Tribune, and these people are all loca...

Distribution Research Posts #2: Sports Illustrated

Sports illustrated has a paper magazine that is very popular, while also having articles on their website. On their website, they have links to all their social media platform accounts, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. When you click on the social media's platform icon, it brings you to their page/account on that platform. The website has several pictures, all of them pertaining to popular sports players and teams. It is very easy to find out how to subscribe to their magazine because at the top right corner of the page at all times, there is a "subscribe" link, that opens another tab and allows you to purchase a subscription. There is only 1 subscription option that is $20 for 16 copies that Sports Illustrated makes throughout the year. The page also has examples of past magazines too look at and at the bottom of the page there is a section for reviews from customers. This was to entice the reader that the magazine is worth the purchase.

Distribution Research Posts #1: Golf Digest

Golf Digest has a magazine, website, and online version of the magazine on the website. On their website, they have links to all their social media platform accounts, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and more. When you click on the social media's platform icon, it brings you to their page/account on that platform. The website contains several images, some real and some drawn cartoons, which are very colorful and entice the reader to enter into the article. It is very easy to find out how to subscribe to their magazine because at the top right corner of the page at all times, there is a "subscribe" link, that opens another tab and allows you to purchase a subscription you choose, with 3 options. One is a 1 year subscription for $15, the second is a 2 year subscription priced at $20, and the third is a subscription to their online instructional videos that are called "on demand". This is priced at $99 per year. This website can also lead to the...

Revision #2

I decided that the cover page looked best as shown in the picture. The focus of the picture in the page is Carson, the golfer. The original draft had Carson more towards the right side of the cover page. I shifted the picture towards the left of the page to make Carson become more centered in the page. It adds some water into the frame, which makes the picture more appropriate as the best golf courses in the world have water.

Traditional Distribution

The traditional distribution for a magazine would be to sell them to customers through stores found in their local cities or counties. The distributing process is shown in the illustration above. The publishers will sell their magazine to wholesalers, who then sell them to local stores. The National Distributors have a limited delivery range, unless they are a commercial company, such as ESPN or TIME magazine. Since my magazine is found locally and not nationally, there is no need to have a National Distributors. I would distribute the magazine to stores myself, or hire one person to do it. There is no need to have distributors or wholesalers because the range of my magazine.

Marketing Plan

Based on my research of magazine advertisements and marketing strategies, my marketing plan will depend on local networks and social media for advertisements and marketing. Social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook allow you to target a specific group of people who live in a certain location. My location would be Sarasota, Florida. Not only will their be an advertisement, I would also put a supporting link to purchase the magazine once they click or tap on the ad. I will also runs ads in the local newspaper, along with other newspapers from different cities around Sarasota. This will allow high school teams from other cities to stay up to date as well as those in the specific area.

Revision #1

For my revision, I decided to move the title of the article away from the person in the picture, and more into the open space, where there is no action. This allowed me to enlarge the text and see the action of the picture more clearly. It allows the picture to stand out more and the focus shifts more toward the player. The text in the article was edited to make it look more professional. The first draft had text that did not have any indentations or paragraph separation, so i had to make sure that was fixed. Each paragraph is around the same length, with some shorter and some longer adjusting to the information being given.

Audience Engagement Research: Local Sports Journal

Local Sports Journal is a magazine that covers a wide range of sports. This magazine covers the main high school athletes throughout the United States, and highlights their successes in the past time in which the magazine was created. There are basketball, baseball, football, and track athletes found in this magazine. Their highlights are shown, along with their schools successes. Their target audience is similar to mine as we are both targeting people who like hearing about sports, as they probably either play them currently, or just have a general interest in learning about sports news and updates. They both are targeting local areas, but they can be read by anyone. They market their product through the internet and local television stations. They also advertise on social media platforms, Instagram and Facebook. If i were to advertise my product, I would use the local newspaper, local television stations, and distribute them to local centers that are popular, as this will attract...

Audience Engagement Research: Mile High Sports Magazine

Mile High Sports is a sports magazine that covers a wide range of sports. It is located in Denver, Colorado, but covers all of Colorado's professional sports teams. This includes NHL, MLB, NFL, NBA, and colleges. The main sports are Hockey, as shown by the magazine cover because of the weather found in Colorado. Their target audience is similar to mine as we are both targeting people who like to watch, play, or hear about sports, no matter their interaction with it. They both are targeting local areas, but they can be read by anyone. They advertise through National television stations, but only in their local area. They advertise on ESPN, ABC, and all the major sports stations. If i were to advertise my product, I would use the local newspaper, local television stations, and distribute them to local centers that are popular, as this will attract maximum attention. This is the exact area that my magazine is based off of and will have my target audience specifically nailed to t...

Audience Engagement Research: Sportstars

Sportstars is a high school magazine that covers a wide range of sports. This magazine covers the main high school athletes throughout the United States, but is located in Texas and covers Texas high school football for their main portion of their article. They also write about other Texas sports, such as basketball, baseball, and volleyball, but since Texas football is so big in that state, it is the main portion of the magazine during that time of year. Their target audience is similar to mine as we are both targeting people who like to watch, play, or hear about sports, no matter their interaction with it. They both are targeting local areas, but they can be read by anyone. They market their product through the internet and social media, such as Instagram and Facebook, persuading users by offering 3 months free with the purchase of one edition/copy. If i were to advertise my product, I would use the local newspaper, local television stations, and distribute them to local centers ...

Feedback and Revisions

The feedback I received on my midterm submission was both positive and negative. The pictures in the magazine were quality, action photos that pertained to the article written. The issue with them is they took up too much space on the pages, and there was not enough room for the article to be written in full detail. The first revision is to make the pictures smaller and make more room for the article on page 4. This is where the problem was most relevant. These pictures margins caused the articles to be too short, which also needs to be fixed. The articles margins need to expand slightly, and the article needs to be slightly longer as well. These fixes pertain to the article, as the TOC was exceptional. The cover photo needed to be shifted slightly to the left, as this would move the person in the picture more centered and look better. These touch up will improve the appearance of the magazine and attract more customers and keep them interested longer.

My Target Audience

My target audience is all ages and genders in Sarasota county. Since my magazine is a local magazine, it will only pertain to those in the local area that it applies to. Age and gender is not a factor as all ages participate in sports and both genders as well. The income level will vary depending on the sport, as more wealthy elderly people like golf and tennis, and the younger generation and their parents will be more interested in the football, basketball, and baseball stories. Personal interest will be a major role, as their interest must include sports and local sports updates, as that is what the magazine entails. If it is not one of their vested interests, then they will not pick up the magazine. This magazine will appeal to those interested in sports, or have some type of connection to a sport in the local area, such as a player, a parent, or a fan. This magazine will include updates, insight, helpful information, and inside stories on the sports, along with statistics. This wil...

Use of Conventions

The magazine I designed is a sports magazine revolving around local sports in the Sarasota area, while having bits of outside sports news as well. The conventions of these types of magazines are having many pictures of events, people, and the various sports, while having a story to go along with it. The stories tend to be a bit shorter than other magazines as there are more pictures to fit in. My magazine also has several pictures on the article, but my article is not as short as the conventional local magazine. This magazine is made for the "social group" of sports fans, and people who like to play sports in their spare time. This magazine will not only appeal to them, but it will also include them sometimes, as their sport and/or event may be included in an article. This thrill of being included will make them want to read it more, as they will want to see who was included in the issue of magazine they are reading.
